Pregnant?
Do you think you could be pregnant? There are options and there is support available to help you decide what to do. Choosing one option over the other isn’t easy and in the end only YOU can decide what to do.
What’s first?
If you have had unprotected sex over the last few days, or if you think your contraception has failed and you want to prevent a pregnancy emergency contraception is an option for you. You have up to three days (72 hours) after unprotected sex to take emergency hormonal contraception or up to 5 days to have an IUD/coil fitted. To find out how it works and where to go to get emergency contraception visit our emergency contraception venues page.
If this is not an option for you, you should do a pregnancy test as soon as possible. You can do this from the first day of a missed period. If you do one before then you may get a negative result even though you are pregnant. If you are not sure when your next period is due, the earliest time to do a test is three weeks after unprotected sex.
You can buy a pregnancy test to do yourself or you can go to your GP, your Contraception and Sexual Health (CaSH), Terrence Higgins/Brook or Genito-urinary Medicine (GUM) clinic or Walk-in Centre and have a test done for free.
