Contraception

There are 15 different types of contraception to choose from and contraception is free via the NHS.

Using contraception is the surest way to reduce the risk of pregnancy. Some forms of contraception will also protect you against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

Contraceptive methods work in different ways and protect you for different lengths of time. How well they protect you depends on how carefully they are used.

Different methods of contraception will suit different people at different times. When you decide the time is right for you to have sex, choosing a form of contraception that is right for you and your partner is a personal choice. But using contraception every time you have sex is the safest choice.

If you are not sure which type of contraception you want to use it’s a good idea to talk it through with someone you can trust. You can get free, confidential advice and information from any Contraception and Sexual Health (CaSH) or Genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinic or from your GP. You'll find some basic information about various types of contraception available within this section, click on the drop down menu to find out more.
